The ‘58 Festival Sentarse y Sentir’ in Granada (58 Festival Be Seated and Enjoy all the Tastes of Granada) – also The International Festival of Music and Dance, Granada - had an unexpected visit in its early days from Her Majesty Queen Sofia.  The The International Festival of Music and Dance, Granada spans numerous events across various locations in Granada between 25th June and 14th July 2009.  Her Majesty made a private visit, dropping in on a performance by the Corella Ballet de Castilla y Leon in the theatre of the Generalife gardens of the Alhambra, Granada.

The International Festival of Music and Dance, Granada is one of the most appealing festivals of its type in Spain and has its origins in concerts originally performed in the Alhambra’s Carlos V Palace in 1883, moving to the Plaza de los Aljibes in the Alhambra in 1922 aided by the poet Federico Garcia Lorca and a number of other famous artists of the time.

The International Festival of Music and Dance now comprises not only performances by artists from all over Spain and elsewhere in Europe but includes a wide variety of courses in a broad spectrum of the arts, naturally dominated by courses such as Classical Dance but also including courses in Photography, the History of Music and much more.

Festival performances take place in a number of locations in and around Granada, particularly including the Generalife gardens of the Alhambra, which is a particularly large open space, but also including the Museo de las Cuevas del Sacromonte (Museum of the Caves of Sacromonte), focal point of all things connected with Flamenco in Granada.

A full programme of all events making up The International Festival of Music and Dance, Granada can be found at www.granadafestival.org which includes a basic English version for those of us less at ease with some elaborate Spanish.
